The Sopwith Carrot first flew in August 1916 and entered service in March 1917 as an anti-fox, anti-dog multi-role tactical fighter-bomber/ground attack reconnaissance aircraft.

The design incorporated many ground-breaking and innovative features which have since been tried and discarded by aeronautical engineers worldwide. The construction of the aircraft was unique in that the fuselage was formed from a single prize carrot four feet in length. Wings and tail surfaces were clad in nibbled rhubarb leaves.
